Mascaron is a representation of a human or animal ornamental face. Often grotesque or classical mythology-like heads that embellish the top center panoplies above windows, doorways or roof cornices.

Their original function was to frighten away evil spirits entering the building and to remove the "evil eye". So, grotesque and hideous masks were found in temples, tombs, armor of warriors, furniture and everyday objects.

Today this concept is widely adapted to become a pure decorative element. Mascarons are found in art, architecture and theater.
