Carved from one piece of walnut wood using various carving chisels and wood carving knives.

The tradition of carving religious icons goes back to the early centuries of Christianity. John the Baptist is one of the most distinctive characters in the New Testament and standard theme in Christian art.

He was wearing clothes made from camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist. He was preaching about the coming kingdom and the need to repent - 'Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand'.

Often is shown on altarpieces designed for churches dedicated to him, or where the donor patron was named for him.
